Silk Export – Online Business Ideas
Silk is a natural fiber protein that is appreciated for its softness and glaze. This fabric is considered royal and is worn on special occasions in India. Silk reached India mainly through trade. It is said that there was a specific route called the silk route to spread silk trade across the world. In India it first carved its niche in Gujarat, later spreading to various parts of the country.
The primary customers for this rich fabric were Kings and other royalties. And therefore, the weaving centers developed in near the vicinity of their dwelling. Another sector that demanded silk was temples of all kinds. Thus, holy cities such as Banaras also developed weaving units.
1. Production of Silk
Silk production for commercial purposes is termed sericulture.
Sericulture is a high maintenance industry. One has to take care about proper hatching of the moth and for a proper diet of the insects. The eggs are generally kept at 65 degrees F, and they hatch at 77 degrees.
The silkworms munch their food to have enough energy to build a cocoon. Inside their silk glands, they produce jelly-like substance and this is the cocoon that they build. This cocoon is later boiled or baked to extract raw silk. Each cocoon is made up of a filament between 600 and 900 meters long. Five and eight of these super-fine filaments are twisted together to make one thread.
Finally, these silk threads combine to form a cloth.
2. The Sericulture and Silk Sector
India is the second-largest producer of silk in the world. It produces eighteen percent of the world’s total silk. The main varieties of silk produced in the country are Mulberry, Eri, Tasar, and Muga.
3. The Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC)
The Indian Textile industry is mostly controlled under government organizations and very few under semi-government or private institutions. The Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC) is one such council that controls the silk export of India. It was set up in 1983 as a company, not-for-profit under Companies Act, duly sponsored by the Government of India in the Ministry of Textiles. The Council has a membership of 510 regular exporters of Silk products. Other than this around 1800 exporters have registered with the Council.
The Indian Silk Export Promotion Council works together with the Government of India on the silk sector’s policy formulation. It provides specialized services to the entrepreneurs and encourages them to widen global business opportunities for the silk industry of the country.
There are main activities of the council which are enlisted below.
- Explore markets and identifies items offering export potential by conducting market surveys.
- Establish contacts with prospective buyers to generate their interest in Indian Silk products.
- Sponsor trade delegation, study teams, and sales teams to various markets abroad.
- Organize Buyer–Seller Meets for its member exporters.
- Organize Silk fairs and exhibitions in India.
- Participate in trade fairs and exhibitions abroad.
- Resolve trade disputes.
- Launch generic promotion of silk products from India.
- Organize Workshops/Seminars on various trade and policy-related issues.
To get these benefits one can register himself for membership with the council. Any exporter who deals with natural silk can register in the council as an exporter member. To avail of this opportunity, one has to fill up the application form, enclose Cheque/DD and enclose a bankers certificate and IEC.
